This article focuses on some results of a research that aimed to study the meanings that some groups in a particular area of the urban periphery of Montevideo, Uruguay, construct in relation to their actions, with emphasis on those about their links with state agents and their strategies to build autonomy. One of the results is the search to make the public common, to incorporate into the logic of the production of the common for the sustainability of life resources that are administered by the State. This contributes to the implementation of alternatives to confinement insofar as the protagonists themselves give it the sense of working in practices and for the creation of public policies that favor them and for processes of autonomy, participation and social emancipation. In the discussion, I delve into some dimensions of the communalization of the public in the case of a permanent inter-institutional work space promoted by one of the organizations that I studied that works in the area in terms of deinstitutionalization and in relation to the social and solidarity economy. These dimensions are: the nature of the framework, the normative and institutional transformations and the articulations between the paradigm of the common and that of deinstitutionalization and the social and solidarity economy. Both these dimensions and multiple questions are raised to continue deepening in this line.

RESUMO

Pentacyclic triterpenes, including lupeol, α- amyrin, and ß-amyrin, present a large range of biological activities including anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, and gastroprotective properties. The phytochemistry of dandelion (Taraxacum officinale) tissues has been widely described. Plant biotechnology offers an alternative for secondary metabolite production and several active plant ingredients are already synthesized through in vitro cultures. This study aimed to establish a suitable protocol for cell growth and to determine the accumulation of α-amyrin and lupeol in cell suspension cultures of T. officinale under different culture conditions. To this end, inoculum density (0.2% to 8% (w/v)), inoculum age (2- to 10-week-old), and carbon source concentration (1%, 2.3%, 3.2%, and 5.5% (w/v)) were investigated. Hypocotyl explants of T. officinale were used for callus induction. Age, size, and sucrose concentrations were statistically significant in cell growth (fresh and dry weight), cell quality (aggregation, differentiation, viability), and triterpenes yield. The best conditions for establishing a suspension culture were achieved by using a 6-week-old callus at 4% (w/v) and 1% (w/v) of sucrose concentration. Results indicate that 0.04 (±0.02) α-amyrin and 0.03 (±0.01) mg/g lupeol can be obtained in suspension culture under these starting conditions at the 8th week of culture. The results of the present study provide a backdrop for future studies in which an elicitor could be incorporated to increase the large-scale production of α-amyrin and lupeol from T. officinale.

RESUMO

Background: The phenomenon of deformation of devices for closure of intracardiac defects in catheterization has been reported, but not of devices for closure of patent ductus arteriosus. Objective: to report a case of deformation of a relatively new type of device for closure of patent ductus arteriosus. Methods: report an adult with hypertensive patent ductus arteriosus and a positive balloon occlusion test will be presented, in whom the occlusion was attempted with an Occlutech®-PDA device. Results: Upon delivery, the device took the shape of a "horn" instead of a "champagne cork" (usual appearance), so it was extracted prior to it is release and the procedure was carried out with another device. Conclusion: To our knowledge, no deformation during the delivery transcatheter of the Occlutech®-PDA device has been published. Adverse events related to new technologies, as in our case, should be reported as soon as possible, since it can help manufacturers to improve their quality and provide greater safety to patients.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: There are few studies comparing the expression of enamel proteins, such as amelogenin, and cytokeratins in cyst and odontogenic tumors like in ameloblastoma and odontogenic keratocyst, indicating that amelogenin could be a potential biomarker for the aggressiveness in the odontogenic tumors. The aim of this study was to evaluate if the expression of amelogenin, cytokeratin AE1/AE3 (CKAE1/AE3) and cytokeratin 14 (CK14) in cysts and odontogenic tumors with calcified matrices such as calcifying odontogenic cyst (COC), compound (CdO) and complex (CxO) odontomas, adenomatoid odontogenic tumor (AOT) and calcifying epithelial odontogenic tumor (CEOT) as an aggressiveness indicator. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Three COC, eight CxO, three CdO, twelve AOT, two CEOT and three dental germs were submitted to an immunohistochemistry panel of antibodies composed of amelogenin, CKAE1/AE3 and CK14. RESULTS: CKAE1/AE3 and CK14 was present in all odontogenic epithelia. The amelogenin protein was detected in prismatic and amorphous calcified matrices of epithelial origin belonging to CxO, CdO, AOT, COC and the tooth germs used as controls. On the other hand, the CEOT was the only tumor or cyst studied that did not present immunostaining for amelogenin in calcified matrices. CONCLUSION: Amelogenin was detected in pathologies with a low or absent recurrence rate and excellent prognosis. CEOT was the lesion of greater clinical aggressiveness which did not express amelogenin. The presence of amelogenin in calcified matrices of odontogenic arise could be an indicator of low aggressiveness.

RESUMO

Aim: The objective of our study was to determine whether the SARS-CoV-2-positive mothers transmit the virus to their hand-expressed colostrum. Methods: This is an observational prospective study that included pregnant women who tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 by PCR test on a nasopharyngeal swab at the moment of childbirth and who wanted to breastfeed their newborns. A colostrum sample was obtained from the mothers by manual self-extraction. To collect the samples, the mothers wore surgical masks, washed their hands with an 85% alcohol-based gel, and washed their breast with gauze that was saturated with soap and water. Results: We obtained seven colostrum samples from different mothers in the first hours postdelivery. SARS-CoV-2 was not detected in any of the colostrum samples obtained in our study. Conclusion: In our study, breast milk was not a source of SARS-CoV-2 transmission. Hand expression (assuring that a mask is used and that appropriate hygienic measures are used for the hands and the breast), when direct breastfeeding is not possible, appears to be a safe way of feeding newborns of mothers with COVID-19.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Genetic and environmental backgrounds influence the development of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). In Latin America, epidemiologic data are scarce. We aimed to determine the prevalence of RA in Chile in a population-based study. METHODS: The National Health Survey was a cross-sectional household survey with a stratified multistage probability sample of 6233 participants performed between August 2016 and March 2017. A screening instrument for RA was applied to a random sample of 3847 subjects > 30 years old. Positive screening was defined by at least 1 of the following: 2 swollen joints for at least 4 consecutive weeks (past/present), and/or a diagnosis of arthritis in the past. Individuals with positive screening had rheumatoid factor, anticitrullinated protein antibodies, and C-reactive protein measured, as well as clinical examination performed by a rheumatologist. Self-report of doctor-diagnosed RA was also performed. RESULTS: The screening questionnaire was applied to 2998 subjects. A positive screening was found for 783 (22.1%). Among subjects with positive screening, 493 (66%) had a clinical evaluation performed by a rheumatologist. Using the American College of Rheumatology/European League Against Rheumatism 2010 classification criteria, prevalence was 0.6% (95% CI 0.3-1.2). Prevalence was higher in women, and 3.3% of subjects self-reported having RA. CONCLUSION: According to this national population-based study, RA prevalence in Chile is 0.6% (0.3-1.2), a value similar to what has been found in developed countries and slightly lower than some Latin American countries. Self-reporting leads to overestimating RA.

RESUMO

Background: Taraxacum officinale G.H. Weber ex Wiggers is a wild plant used in folk medicine to treat several diseases owing to bioactive secondary metabolites present in its tissue. The accumulation of such molecules in plant cells can occur as a response against abiotic stress, but these metabolites are often deposited in low concentrations. For this reason, the use of a biotechnological approach to improve the yields of technologically interesting bioactive compounds such as anthocyanins is a compelling option. This work focuses on investigating the potential of in vitro T. officinale cultures as an anthocyanin source. Results: To demonstrate the suitability of anthocyanin induction and accumulation in calluses under specific conditions, anthocyanin was induced in the T. officinale callus. A specific medium of 5.5% sucrose supplemented with 6-benzylaminopurine /1-naphthaleneacetic acid in a 10:1 ratio was used to produce an anthocyanin yield of 1.23 mg g-1 fw. An in vitro dandelion callus line was established from this experiment. Five mathematical models were then used to objectively and predictably explain the growth of anthocyanin-induced calluses from T. officinale. Of these models, the Richards model offered the most suitable representation of anthocyanin callus growth in a solid medium and permitted the calculation of the corresponding kinetic parameters. Conclusions: The findings demonstrate the potential of an in vitro anthocyanin-induced callus line from T. officinale as an industrial anthocyanin source.

RESUMO

Health education is fundamental in the management of RA patients. This study explored patient needs for educational material appropriate for RA patients in our region through a website. This study includes seven focus groups and semi-structured interviews across 4 countries (Argentina, Chile, Colombia, and Mexico) with 71 RA patients. Transcripts were analyzed by anthropologists using qualitative analysis (QA), resulting in themes and subthemes to be developed. Five themes and over 50 subthemes of interest were identified by patients. Grouped into categories as follows: (1) knowing the disease, (2) living with arthritis, (3) treatment and therapies for RA, (4) psychosocial support, and (5) information for families. A response was written by the team in plain Spanish on patient subthemes of interest including additional areas that the team considered relevant. Three videos for YouTube were produced: on patient-doctor relationships, patients at work, and home and at the clinic. Illustrations in a comic book format on RA diagnosis were created. The educational site on RA of PANLAR can be found at htpp://artritisreumatoide.cl. This project accomplished a comprehensive list of RA patient interests, revealing the complex relationship between the information on the disease, the experience of a chronic disease, and the way in which patients approach, conceive, and manage their disease. We expect to gather information on how the website will be used in the future for patients and their families and maintain and improve the website as well as adapt its content to different socioeconomic realities.

RESUMO

Advertising uses stereotyped body images to promote physical ideals and unhealthy eating habits related to food products which are targeted especially at young people. The purpose of this study, carried out in Barcelona (Spain) in May 2013, was to test the perception of 139 young people of university age - with and without eating disorders - regarding 25 values in seven food commercials that did and did not use body image strategies. Results show that only the group of young people with eating disorders considered commercials using body image strategies to have a very negative influence on values such as health, well-being, family and effort. In contrast, the assessment of the two groups regarding the rest of the commercials greatly coincided. These results show that today’s university youth have accepted as normal a beauty canon based on the prevailing social and economic order, while young people in treatment for eating disorders have learned to denaturalize such messages.

BACKGROUND: there are damaging habits called neurosis which are considered important factors in the beginning and evolution of the periodontal disease. These habits can influence its appearance and course, as well as the result of its treatment. OBJECTIVE: to present a case of an infrequent habit in Stomatology. CLINICAL CASE: the case of a twenty-seven-year-old patient is presented. The patient's gums, in the anteroinferior region, were out of position because of her habit since childhood of biting her nails and packing them on the gums of her anteroinferior teeth. A scarce dentobacterial plaque and the presence of tartar, as well as dental caries, gingival resections in the anteroposterior area with denudation of the radicular surface were observed in the physical examination. The patient was a little shy, impatient, frustrated. The diagnosis and handling of this infrequent disease was discussed. Psychological and odontological therapy was applied and an optimum oral hygiene was carried out by the patient and the periodontist made a strict vigilance. CONCLUSIONS: the patient is under treatment with a satisfactory evolution.

Background: there are damaging habits called neurosis which are considered important factors in the beginning and evolution of the periodontal disease. These habits can influence its appearance and course, as well as the result of its treatment. Objective: to present a case of an infrequent habit in Stomatology.Clinical case: the case of a twenty-seven-year-old patient is presented. The patients gums, in the anteroinferior region, were out of position because of her habit since childhood of biting her nails and packing them on the gums of her anteroinferior teeth. Conclusions: the patient is under treatment with a satisfactory evolution(AU)

RESUMO

We evaluate the total phenolic compounds (TPC) content and the antioxidant activity (AA) of extracts obtained from ground fresh thyme (FT) and depleted thyme (DT), a by-product of the process of essential oil extraction. In addition, enzymatic treatments were evaluated to improve the extraction yields of polyphenolic compounds from thyme. Extractions were performed using several solvents as methanol, ethanol, and water. Enzymes were applied prior to extraction or during the extraction process. The best results were obtained using a mixture of methanol and water, resulting in 2790 and 220 mg Gallic acid equivalent (GAE)/L of TPC for FT and DT, respectively. A similar result was observed for AA. With regard to enzymatic treatment, application of Grindamyl CA 150 enzyme as a pre-treatment resulted in the production of an extract from DT with 614 mg TE (trolox equivalent)/L of AA, 70% more than the control, and an AA of 621 mg TE/L (74% more than the control sample) was obtained using Grindamyl CA 150 during the extraction process. These results suggest that enzymatic treatment is an interesting alternative for producing antioxidant extracts from DT.

This CAT (Critically Appraised Topic) answered the question: in subjects at high risk for prostate cancer, can lycopene reduce incidence and mortality of this cancer? The clinical question was analyzed in three parts: patient, intervention and outcome. The purpose was to verify the validity and applicability of the results regarding lycopene consumption on effectiveness in reducing the incidence of prostate cancer.
